Tips for a Budget-Friendly Vacation

Labor Day was fast approaching, and I decided I wanted to plan a last-minute getaway. Yet even just two nights at a hotel plus a few excursions would set me back a couple hundred dollars. Knowing my future savings goals, I began to reconsider and decided to take a more frugal day trip. With good planning, it was equally as fun and far less expensive!

If you’re also looking to save your money and enjoy some time out, consider these tips.

1. Remember that taking frugal trips is not a sign of financial failure but rather an opportunity to build to financial freedom.

Can you imagine your life without debt or money strain? Saving consistently and purposefully can help you achieve this kind of freedom. Taking budget-friendly trips right now ensures you remain focused on these goals, and it means that one day you will hopefully get to take the more extravagant vacation. In the meantime, enjoy a different opportunity while understanding that financial freedom is in the works.

2. Find out what other people enjoyed at your destination.

Planning is essential to remaining within your budget. Look at Pinterest to see what other people did while there. Review local travel blogs and websites. This information will help you pick cost-friendly activities that are less touristy and more genuine. Planning will also ensure you make the most of your time.

3. Road trip versus overnight.

While you may have to get up earlier, you will save a ton of money by not staying in a hotel. Plus knowing you have less time in a place will ensure you maximize your time and truly enjoy the experience. Look at your state’s tourism website to get an idea of local day trips that would be fun for you.

4. Go out into nature.

Besides state and national park entry fees, hiking and exploring nature is completely free and incredibly refreshing. Check out Alltrails.com to find nature trails near you. The site allows you to explore easy to difficult trails, quiet to busy trails, and many other aspects of the experience. You can also look into state and national parks in your area and see what experiences others recommend in these locations.
